The term ‘Corporate Headshot’ is over. We are all personal brands when it comes to social media. Potential clients like to connect not only with the business, but with the person behind it. That’s why we’re here to show you how you can do things a bit differently.
Forget traditional, unless it truly speaks to you.
Instead of trying hard to show how serious you are, choose to make yourself relatable to your audience. The beauty of social media is its ability to connect like minded people, so use that to your advantage.
The fitness industry is a tricky one, as new clients often feel intimidated. A friendly and inviting approach is often the most effective as it makes all the difference if the new gym-goer feels welcomed by the person who will be training them. This is why at David Lloyd Derby we opted for a more friendly relaxed approach, instead of all guns blazing! (Pardon the pun!)
In Matt’s case below, traditional suits him. He is a CEO, speaker and a well known businessman. As a public figure, it’s good to remain neutral. Although we did shoot his photos on location, it helped changing it up from a standard studio background. That brings us to our next point.
Ditch the studio...
Pick a background that reflects you, whether that’s your office, a coffee shop or something that relates to your business. Shooting on location will make you more laid-back, and that’s sure to bring out your best self.
Let’s take these three lovely ladies for example. Jade below, a consultant, wasn’t too excited with the thought of having her photos taken (lets face it, none of us are!). We knew that taking her to a more relaxed setting would make her more comfortable, so a local coffee shop was the place of choice, and we were right! The familiar place helped bring out her bubbly personality, which shows just how approachable and friendly she is to her audience.
A similar approach was taken with Rachel below, and the chosen background was a local restaurant. She is the owner of her own bid writing and consultancy business called Ask The Chameleon, and wanted something more fashionable and relaxed. The Yard’s statement wall and creative lighting we added, really made the image pop!
As for Louise, she is the head of Marketing for NK Motors, and the location for the shoot was her workplace. Different lighting techniques were used, to make sure she is the main focus, but still bringing some attention to the cars in the background.
Wear what you like!
Don’t like wearing suits? Don’t wear one then! It doesn’t matter if you’re the CEO of a Fortune 500 company; if you prefer to wear sandals in your day to day job, wear sandals in your photo. I mean, look at Steve Jobs for example. This also applies if your job requires a specific uniform. You are showing YOU, not your job.
Suzanne above here is in the Health and Safety industry, which sometimes can be portrayed as stuffy. Shot in The QUAD, we thought it was important to show Suzanne the individual, who is in fact incredibly laid back and friendly, and the photo shows that well.
And finally, choose a team of photographers who know what they’re doing.
A well experienced photographer will make sure the outcome highlights your most compelling traits. We use these techniques daily in our business, and no two portraits come out the same, because no two people are the same. Our main objective is to make sure the client is heard, and have their true identity portrayed.
As you can see from our selection, there is no right or wrong way of taking a portrait. What matters is that you find a way to make your audience respond to you. It is easier to trust a human being, especially a relatable one, and there is nothing more important to a business than a client’s trust.
